EXCELLENT barbecued meats! My favorite is the tri-tip, but I've taste the brisket, chicken and pulled pork. All outstanding. And a real bonus at this establishment is wonderful sides. I really like their macaroni and cheese and corn bread. Also, their salads are wonderful. They have a very large patio which is delightfully dog friendly, two thumbs way up!
This would be an awesome spot to visit during the warmer days, as there is a nice outdoor seating area. I recommend ordering the BBQ meal, as it comes with two sides and a slice of bread. What's barbeque without the sides? The tri tip, brisket, and pulled pork were all flavorful and smokey. As for the sides, my favorite was the mac & cheese. The potato salad, fries, and bread were pretty standard. The meat was good quality and everything was definitely filling, but the price was a bit high.
As a BBQ snob and aspiring pit master, I'm very impressed how good Canyons was. Had lunch here last weekend with a few friends. We shared a salad and a 4-meat combo plate of tritip, burnt ends, brisket, and pork ribs. Came with three sides in which we chose cornbread, mac & cheese, and coleslaw. You order at the counter, then seat yourself & pickup when ready. Portions are a tad small and I do have some technical critiques. I'd recommend getting two 4-meat plates for a group of three. - Burnt ends: tasty, tender, fatty but drowned with sauce masking a lot of the meat. Stylistic choice, but having sauce on the side where would be ideal. - Pork ribs: perfect cook --- not fall off the bone, you still get a supportive bite. However, obviously pulled before a bark could be set. Sauce covered this up, a bit shardy on the texture. Also trimmed to be small. - Brisket: tender fatty point meat. Sliced too thin, but bark was set and well seasoned. Not too salty. - Tritip: probably my least favorite of the four. Tough, plain, boring. If there's anything that needs sauce it's this meat. Better on a salad than on a plate. Not terrible though. Portions of sides are also pretty small. I'd say it's roughly 3/4 of a cup on each. Average tasting. Plenty of seating indoor and outdoors, really clean and spacious throughout, and they even got this cool knee-operated double sink to wash your hands. Definitely will be back here the next time I'm around the area. Solid 4/5 and one of the better BBQ spots I've had in the Bay Area.
Placed a takeout order through their website around 11 AM on a Saturday. Food was ready for pick up at exactly the right time. We got meat only and made rice and salad at home. Dark meat smoked chicken ($10 for quarter bird) - doesn't seem to be a large portion, just a thigh and drumstick, but it was very juicy and well seasoned with lots of smoky flavor. Not too dry at all. Surprisingly good! Tri-tip ($19 half lb) - tender, moist, and balanced smoky flavor will make this one your favorite. Goes really well with their barbecue sauce. Brisket ($20.50 half lb) - packed full of flavor, fattier than the tri-tip, lots of peppery seasoning on the crust. Area near the crust is a tad dry, as expected, but definitely edible. Greasy, in a good way! Pulled pork ($14 half lb) - lots of great flavor here too, seemed a tiny bit dry, but was perfect with the sauce. Classic pork flavors. Little one's favorite was the brisket. His comment: "I like the brisket because it has a bunch of flavor." "Mmmmmmmmm! Pulled pork is a close second!" He said the tri-tip was "too chewy". DH liked tri-tip the best. "Great flavor, it's pretty juicy too. Probably like the brisket a little better than the pulled pork. I like the chicken the second. I was worried about the chicken being too smoky, but it was okay." My fav was the tri-tip, but everything was excellent. Highly recommend this place to satisfy those BBQ cravings without breaking out the grill. A full pound of each meat is a better deal per unit, but we wanted a sampler. DH said it's a nice location if you wanted to eat there, but it's kinda dark inside.
My first trip to Canyons was three months ago, and while it wasn't awful, I was disappointed. The team at Canyons reached out and encouraged me to give them another shot, so I did earlier this week. I was pleasantly surprised this time around! I intentionally avoided anything I hadn't enjoyed last time, to give myself the chance to try the breadth of their menu. This visit included a 2 meat combo plate with ribs, burnt ends, baked beans, and fries. The burnt ends were a nice improvement on the brisket; I found them tender, juicy, and with a flavorful sauce that made them a nice feature of my meal. The ribs were also quite good, the meat came off the bone easily but wasn't do overcooked that it fell off. I quite liked the texture of the bite, and the seasoning was adequate. The beans had decent flavor, though I found myself wanting a punch of pepper spice, possibly a hint of bourbon, or maybe a sweet touch molasses/honey/brown sugar. The fries were actually pretty good and went reasonably well with the BBQ sauce, which is serviceable in its own right. I got a soda this time so I could try their Stubborn fountain, and that was a fun addition to the experience. While I won't do that often simply because I'm not a soda person, I did enjoy trying the different flavors. I settled on a Pineapple Cream Soda for my first fill, then the black cherry with tarragon on the refill. The cornbread was once again quite good, and they paid attention to my last review and had honey sitting out visibly in a squeeze bottle for anyone who needed it! Overall, this visit was much improved over the first one, and I'm looking forward to stopping by Canyons again. I would still hesitate to rank them amongst Bay Area BBQ royalty like Horn or Capelo's, but they're certainly going to be my go-to BBQ joint in the Hayward/Castro Valley area.
I get canyons BBQ Breakfast at least once a week. Really good price for an amazing flavor profile. They did not stinge on the contents of the sandwich. I also get their breakfast tacos. My wife always make sure she gets her order in as well. If you come consistently, you can also get reward points and get discounts on further purchases. I am not a paid reviewer. This place is the real deal.
We've heard a lot about Canyons from varies people but never tried it till now! My fiancé and I both got the meat combo (2 meats, 2 sides, and a choice of bread) for around $25 each. At first the meat looked the a decently small amount, but it was definitely filling with everything. I got the pulled pork and hot links and my fiancé got the brisket and tri tip. All the meats were so good and tender, and the hot links had a good punch to it. Overall, the food was delicious and hot, especially on a cold night. We were filled to satisfaction and everyone was nice there!
First time here and I'll definitely be back. The cornbread was legit and the brisket was on point!
Great food! The sauce is amazing, the place is clean, would 100% recommend! Debbie was very attentive and gave lots of recommendations.
(4 out of 5) The food here is pretty good, I've been 3 times and i got a brisket sandwich once, the brisket by itself another time, and a loaded potato the next time. Brisket was super good, I see a lot of the bad reviews talk about how the food comes out cold... barbecue takes time so I'd rather have some cold food then rushed food, and if it matters that much to you it's not hard to ask what food is fresh and ready! Service is very good I've came in a couple times and got a soda and watched hockey on their TVs. Talked to some of the workers, Rocco is a cashier there with great service. Ambiance is cool like I said they have TVs and the seating area inside and especially outside is very cool with a fire pit as well! When you come tell them Rothyy sent you
